Q: Hi I found this book The Chimes by Charles Dickens at a yard sale and I have been trying to find out its age and if it is a 1st edition and have found nothing, so I decided to go another route, through the publisher which has led me to the expert, you. So I guess the question is what can you tell me about my book?
A: Your book is a late reprint. The first edition was published in the 1840’s. Your book is part of the Vademecum Series. It was published in 1915.
Altemus published no first editions of Charles Dickens. Altemus published books for reading for the first time in 1889 which was nineteen years after Dickens died.
Here is a new picture for this series. In the first format some of these books had beautiful multicolored inlaid pictures with gold gilt lettering. The cover was designed by the Decorative Designers. This is exemplified by the angle of the first leg on the letter “N”. This series was published between 1909 and 1912.

This series has two formats. The first format for this 12 book series could be found with any of five colors. In addition there are four possible flower arrangements for the cover. Thus any title has 20 possible covers.

This early Altemus series is interesting because all of the 41 books had a different first format cover. The later books ( #31-41) are very hard to find.

This series has two formats. The cover of format 2 is the same as that which is seen in Series 202- The Young People’s Library. The cover of the format 1 books have an applique picture relating to the book. The title page of both formats is glossy and states Altemus’ Favorite Series. Here is book #10 of format 1. I am still missing three of the nineteen books of format 1.

Henry Altemus published the first edition of Quo Vadis by Henry Sienkiewicz. I have seen two editions as of this time. Here is a picture of the second edition. It has been seen in several colors.

Here is book #2 for the Wyncote Series (#198). This is a new cover for the database.
The cover of these books is blind stamped. This book is green. Red and brown have also been seen. Some of these books have the gold gilt ornament on the lower right of the cover.
