David McKay Company
Juvenile Quarto Series-1935
Books for Young Children-1937
Old Favorites Series-1938
In 1935 David McKay reprinted all four Henry Altemus Company books from
Series #113 Juvenile Quartos Series (http://henryaltemus.com/series/series113.htm).
This series includes the four books listed
below. The four books made up McKay's Juvenile Quarto Series.
1. Tale of Peter Rabbit
2. Three Little Pigs
3. Little Small Red Hen
4. Story of Little Black Sambo (Copyright Altemus 1931)
The Altemus and the McKay books were 8.25 x 6.25.
These Altemus editions were published in four formats. David McKay's
Juvenile Quarto Series included the third and fourth formats which
Altemus first printed in the early 1930-1931. The first McKay reprints
were produced in both a "library buckram binding" at $1.00 and cloth
binding at 35 cents.
In 1937 the four books were part of an eight volume series called Books
for Young Children. By that time the cloth format books were 50 cents.
The Story of Little Black Sambo book cover consisted of a line drawn
picture of Little Black Sambo. (Altemus Format 4)
The first three books of the Altemus and the McKay series were
published with an applique which filled the entire front cover. These
paste-ons have book appropriate multicolored pictorial pictures. Dust
jackets duplicated the front cover. (Altemus Format 3)
Both of the formats above were also published by Altemus with
reinforced buckram and plain brown endpapers. This buckram variant was
first introduced by Altemus in 1930.
David McKay, under the heading of "Old Favorites Series", published
these four books in 1938 in a cloth bound book (50 cents) as well as
the library buckram binding ($1.00). The McKay formats are identical to
the Altemus ones.
A common mistake is believing that the books were published in these
formats as first editions by David McKay. This is not the case. Worth
repeating is the
fact that the McKay editions which first saw the light of day beginning
in 1935 were published originally by the Henry Altemus Company.
