Henry Altemus Company

The Saalfield Publishing Company

Beginning in 1934 the Saalfield Publishing Company reprinted a number of the original Henry Altemus Company juvenile series. In all, thirteen series were reprinted. The Saalfield catalogue number is noted in parentheses after the series name below

The reprinted series were:
Annapolis Series (#1372). Later reprints are #3301, 3302, 3303.
Battleship Boys Series (#1358)
Circus Boys Series (#1353)
Dave Darrin Series (#1354)
Grace Harlowe Overland Riders Series (#1355)
Madge Morton Series (#1357)
Meadow-Brook Series (#1356). Late reprints are #3757, 3758, 3759.
Pony Rider Boys Series (#1351). Later reprints are #3361,3362, 3363.
Randy Starr Series ( Also called Sky Flyers Series) (#1336). Later numbers are #3161,3162, 3163.
Submarine Boys Series (#1361)
Uncle Sam's Boys' Series (Also called Boys of the Army Series) (#1360)
West Point Series (#1359)
Young Engineer's Series (#1352)

These series were published in boxed sets by Saalfield. Each box contained a random grouping of three books from a series. Some series were reprinted in more than one format. Many have been seen in different sizes. The books were priced at 25 cents and the three volume boxes cost 85 cents.

Two "Four-In-One" books were also published in the mid 1930's. One included four stories from the Pony Rider Series while the other included four stories from the Grace Harlowe Overland Riders Series.

Important Point: Saalfield only published reprints of these series. Confusion exists because Saalfield lists itself on the copyright page with the date of the original printing.

Formats: The earlier reprints' covers were usually the same as the line drawn pictures on the earliest Altemus covers. Later reprints had blindstamped covers. (Exception: Randy Starr Series' covers were blindstamped like the Altemus covers.) Saalfield covers were published in various colors. Early and late formats are shown below.

The earlier dust jackets were similar to the early Altemus jackets. Later some of the series had different jacket pictures. See below for examples.

Annapolis Series #1372 H. Irving Hancock

Randy Starr Series (Also called the Sky Flyers Series) #1336 by Eugene Martin
All three of the Altemus titles were reprinted by Saalfield in two different formats. The first was published in 1936. One major difference between these books and the other Saalfield reprints is that each title in the first Saalfield format of this series has a unique dust jacket picture. (This is also true for the original Altemus editions.) In the second format all the books have the same dust jacket. The earlier books are 7.625 x 5.25. The later books are 8.125 x 5.75. The later books are also numbered 3161-3162-3163. Both formats’ covers have been seen in various colors.
