The right half of the cover has a book appropriate multicolored
pictorial picture. Dust jacket is brown uncoated matching the vellum

Variously colored cloth with a multicolored line drawn book appropriate
picture. The cover is the same as the corresponding Format 1 book of
the same title. Lettering is usually in red or black but never silver

Cover has applique which has a book appropriate multicolored book
appropriate pictorial picture. Title is above and series name below the
applique. Dust jacket matches the cover. 7.5 x 5.5.
Series Notes:
1. The first 7 books were published by Henry Altemus initially in 1899.
8 books were published in 1900 - 1902. When Henry Altemus Company
published the entire series in 1903, #3 was dropped. #9-12 were added.
#8 became #11 and the illustration number was reduced from 80 to 41 (in
that book).
2. Format 1's last year with the second spine used the last numbering
system (1-12 with omissions). These books were published in 1903.
3. Altemus used early title pages for later books in this series. Such
that books of formats 2 and 3 occasionally noted Henry Altemus not
Henry Altemus Company at the base of their title page. Especially true
with the Pilgrim's Progress books.
4. With the Exception of Gulliver's Travels all of the Format 2's books
show the new 1900 copyright.
5. Most of the format 3 and 4 books have the later 1909 copyright.
6. Title #3 is the scarcest of all of the books in this series because
it only appeared in format 1.
7. During the run of Format 3 books the price was changed from 50c to
$1.00. This can be seen on the dust jacket reverse.
8. The books of the four formats have the same number of illustrations.
(one exception-see above)
9. Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, Swiss Family Robinson, The Adventures
of Robinson Crusoe and Aesop's Fables were all originally converted to
one syllable forms by Mary Godolphin. She was not given credit in the
Altemus book.
