only)
Henry Altemus
Company Format:
2 Volumes: 1 - 12
Numerous different covers varying from brightly colored
flowers to paste-on paintings to blindstamped. See below
in the picture section. Boxed until 1916. Dust jackets
from 1917-1926. 6.5 x 4.5
Series Notes:
1. Format 1 was published only in 1899 on the Henry
Altemus imprint. Beginning with Format 2 in 1900 the
imprint changed to Henry Altemus Company.
2. At its peak this series had 186 books from the attached
list of 188. Random insertions and deletions of the books
from the list occurred yearly. No two years included
exactly the same titles.
3. Many years had multiple different covers. Sometimes
there were the same covers with different colors. Certain
years had different color covers with a possibility of
several different paste-on flower pictures. Certain years
had combinations of various colors and any one of numerous
applique European paintings pasted onto the cover pattern.

The books of this style format have one of four
possible flower patterns pasted on the cover. Any
flower can appear with any cover color. The four
flowers are shown here.
One exception has been noted. The book below has a
picture of trees and grassland similar to that seen in
the European paintings on the 1901, 1903, and 1907
Vademecum Series appliqués. This cover variant is
quite rare.

These covers have a small
applique. Usually the picture is of a tree, field or
mountains. I have seen more than 50 different ones.
They defy labeling because in fairness many times a
tree is just a tree.
