Series Notes:
1. This series is discussed in great detail in the Young People's
Library section.
2. Format 1 was not numbered. The numbering here begins with format 2's
numbering.
3. Altemus occasionally used the same covers on the early (first
edition) books as well as later editions. The tips below will help date
your book.
4. The Lives of the Presidents (Book #13) listed Prescott Holmes as the
author in an 1898 edition. For more information on the editions of this
series click here.
Addendum
The first format of the Young People’s Library is easily distinguished
from the later formats by its characteristic spine decoration.
(Exception is Book #12- Mother Goose’s Rhymes.. which in the first and
second editions has a wrap around illustrated cover. It is pictured
below. Since all the books were published before 1900 , they all have
Henry Altemus not Henry Altemus Company at the base of the title page.
This format was published from 1895 until early 1898. This includes
books numbered 1-23.
Most of the books of this format had the same cover picture throughout
format one’s publishing years. Usually however there were two or more
cover color changes. The best example of this is seen with The
Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (book #1). Usually a color change is not
related to the year of the publication or the edition. There are
exceptions however where a change in color somewhere on the cover is
indicative of a change in edition. See Wood’s Natural History (#15).
Several of this format’s books actually had different cover pictures
during the two to three year format run. When this is the case, a
different cover indicates a different publication date (edition). An
example is Book #10- Exploration and Adventure in Africa.
Also of significance is a change in book contents. A prime example can
be seen with book #12- Mother Goose’s Rhymes, Jingles and Fairy Tales.
The first edition of this book has 341 pages whereas a later edition
has 254 pages.
In fact the latter book (Mother Goose’s..) is a good example of all the
points made above. The first edition is the 341 page book and comes in
two colors (see below). The second edition has 254 pages and the cover
is identical to the beige first edition book except that the children’s
clothing is colored differently. The third edition book has a different
cover.
Determining whether your book is a first Altemus edition or not can be
a bit more tricky. The first 6 books were published in 1895. In order
to be a first edition the 1895 must appear at the bottom of the title
page. Unfortunately, having the 1895 date does not mean it is a first
edition. In some of the books Altemus used the early title page after
1895.
The true 1895 editions must have the following:
1. The 1895 date at the base of the title page.
2. On the reverse of the title page listed in a box ONLY the first 6
books. If the ads list to Gulliver’s Travels it is a second edition
even if it has the 1895 date on the title page.
3. There are no ads in the back of the book.
4. A blank spine has been seen on a true first. See here.
The 1896 first editions have the publication date on the base of the
title page and the ads in the front list to Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
Grimm’s was not published until 1898. Occasionally Altemus would list
books not published yet or, for that matter, never published in their
advertisements.
Later books of this format can be dated by using the ads in the the
table below.
A. 1895 (early) |
Title page 1895 with
front ads to Through the Looking-Glass |
B. 1895 (late) |
Title page 1895 with front ads to

C. 1896 |

Grimm's Fairy Tales |
D. 1897 (early) |
