Company Format:
3 Volumes: 1 - 67
Multicolored cloth with line drawn book appropriate
picture. End papers have a seated girl in green in 1902.
Thereafter the end papers are plain. Specific to this
format is a particular flower on the spine. (See picture).
Dust jacket matches the book cover. Jacket is uncoated
brown until 1914 and thereafter it is white and coated.
6.50 x 5.25.
Series Notes:
1. The cover picture of any particular title with the
exception of the colors does not change for the life of
the series. This differs from Formats #1 and #2.
2. Vic, An Autobiography of a Dog was deleted from this
series in 1907.
3. The catalogues indicate certain additions to this
series' list that have not been confirmed by book ads or
by the books themselves. These questionable additions
include the books of the Fairy Tale Series, Holly Tree
Series and Cherrycroft Series in 1909 and 1915. Because of
the questionable nature of these additions, they are not
shown in the series book list above.
4. Book #61 does not have the characteristic spine
picture.
5. For more information on the editions of this series
6. The first list above includes #59a-#64a. These book are
from Series #84- Fairy Tale Series. The books from this
series (#202) are identical to the books from Series #84.
The dust jacket is different however in that it notes the
"Young People's Library" on the spine with a book list on
the rear panel.
Dating your Format 3 books
1. Altemus used the same title page for its Young People
Library books for many years. This page identifies the
series of the book as the Young People's Library Series
and also gives the copyright date. The copyright date
however is not the publication date of Format 3 books.
Altemus just never changed the dates on this page. Also of
note is that this title page was used in other series,
e.g. Boys and Girls Classics among others. For that reason
other series are misidentified frequently.
2. Another caveat regards the dust jacket. Altemus
occasionally used older Dust jackets with newer books.
Format 2 jackets on early Format 3 books occur from time
to time. The ads in the back of the book should always
take priority in dating.
3. The earliest legitimate dust jacket for this series has
Vic as #31 and ends with #55 Josephine. This jacket gave
way within months to a jacket that has the last title on
the reverse as #58- Wonder Book.
With the above notes appreciated, here is how to date your
Format 3 book.
1. 1902-1911 No Listing of Stories from History and no
list of Grace Harlowe Overseas Series
2. 1911-1921- Back ads list Stories from History Series
3. 1921-1922 Wee Books for Wee Folks lists to Grunty
Grunts and Smiley Smile
4. 1923 - Wee Books for Wee Folks list to I Don't Want to
go to Bed
If 1902-1911:
1. Is Vic listed in the ads for the Young People's
Library. If yes, the book is 1902-1906. If not, 1907-1910.
2. If Vic is listed, do the ads have Wee Book, Banbury
Cross Series- If yes: 1904-1906. If no: 1902-1904.
3. If Vic is not listed, if Mother Stories are listed to
title #6- 1907-1908 is your print year. If it lists the
Little Men and Women Series to title- Little Lady-Her
Book, then the book was published in 1908-1909.
4. If Vic is not listed and the last book in the Little
Men and Women Series is Helen's Babies then your book is
from 1908.
5. If Vic is not listed and Automobile Girls to title #3
but no Stories from History books-1910
Exception: If Vic is not listed but the endpapers have
the reading girl, the book is a 1902 book with earlier
advertisements.
If the book is post-1911:
1. 1911- Automobile Girls #3
2. 1911-1912- Automobile Girls #4
3. 1912-1913 Automobile Girls to #5
4. 1914-1919 Automobile Girls #6/Dave Darrin #1
5. 1920- In the Wee Books for Wee Folks ad, the book at
the top of the second column is The Cock, The Mouse and
the Little Red Hen. The Grunty Grunts' books are not
listed.
6. 1921-1922- Lists Grunty Grunts in Wee Books for Wee
Folks ads
7. 1923 Lists I Don't Want to go to Bed in Wee Books
listing. |
