Non Series #3

Alice and Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

Despite frequently advertised claims, the Young People’s Library Lewis Carroll books are not the rarest of the Altemus reprints. Those books are actually very common. Among the rarest Alice books are the Non Series books. These can be find here http://henryaltemus.com/images/NS_3.jpg and http://henryaltemus.com/images/NS_4.jpg.

There are three non series books. One which includes only Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and two that include that story and Through the Looking Glass.
The latter books were published in 1915. Here is a dust jacket for one of these two very scarce books. These books with dust jackets are actually among the very scarcest of Altemus Alice reprints.

Series 125- Little Men and Women Series

Here is a new picture. This dust jacket is for book #10 (Tommy Foster’s Adventures). Dating it is relatively easy.

First note that the jacket is brown and uncoated. These jackets were done prior to 1915.
The back of the jacket has the title Boy Geologist on it. This title was added to the series in 1910.
The price of the books listed on the back of the jacket is $1.00. The $1.00 price was advertised until 1911.

Thus this book was published between 1910 and 1911.

Of note is that the internal ads do not list the Boy Geologist. This probably indicates a 1909 book with an early 1910 jacket. Thus overall an early 1910 book/jacket.

Dating the books of this series is discussed at http://henryaltemus.com/series/series125.htm .

Question & Answer Series 75

Q: I have a book from my grandmother. It is titled “Gold Dust”. I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about it. It does not have an author listed. I noted on your website that there was one Gold Dust series book that was anonymous. The name at the end of the preface is C.M. Yonge. The book was signed by someone who must have given this to my grandmother. He signed and dated it 1912. Thanks for your help.

A: Your book belongs to the Devotional Series and can be seen at
http://henryaltemus.com/series/series75.htm as a Format 5 book.

This title was popular among all the reprint publishing houses. Since none of them paid any royalties this was one of the books that was published in a myriad of formats by different publishers in the late 19th and early 20th century.

This title is not widely collected and your book only has nominal value.
