Between 1901 and 1907 six different Vademecum formats had European paintings on their covers. These paintings were placed as appliques (paste-ons) within the various year’s decorative pattern. As is shown on the page listed above, it has been discovered that frequently two different book cover paintings actually can be combined into a larger picture. This indicates that Altemus took large pictures and cut them up into smaller paintings to use on the front covers of these books.

Even after numerous efforts I have not been able to discover the painter of any of these pictures.
