Question & Answer Series 69 Classics Series

Q: We have an old copy of Undine. Doesn’t seem to exactly fit any of your photos or descriptions. Small, green cloth cover. 5 1/2″ x 4 1/8″. Photo attached. Thanks in advance for any info.

A: This book is part of the Classics Series. It was published between 1907-1909 and originally came in a dust jacket.

Non Series 69 How to Dress a Doll

This little non series book (6.5 x 4.25) had two printings. Today I am adding a picture of the first edition dust jacket. Note that the second edition dust jacket matches the book cover. The covers of both editions are the same except for the colors.

Question & Answer Series 143 Petit Trianon Series

Q: Hi, Someone gave me this book (Child’s Garden of Verses) a few years back. I would just like to know a little more about it. It doesn’t have a date or anything to that effect nor can I find any other that look like it. Thanks.

A: Your book is part of the Petit Trianon Series and was published in 1901-1902.

During this year the left side of the cover was either beige or pink. The right side had a picture of one of sixteen flowers. Yours is a violet. This reprint originally came in a labeled box.

Question & Answer Series 175 Three Volume Sets

Q: Hello, I figured I would write to your company to get the particulars of when you believe this book (In Memoriam) was printed and its approximate worth. I have tried researching it but am at a loss. Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Here are the pictures I can provide.

A: Your book was published as part of the Three Volume Set Series and was printed in 1897.

In this series there were a total of six three volume sets published between 1894 and 1897 of which your book is part of Set #5. All of the sets originally came within a labeled box. It only has nominal value.

A: Your book is part of the Petit Trianon Series and was published in 1901-1902.

During this year the right half of the cover had one of sixteen flowers. Your book has Lilacs (2). The left half of the cover was either beige (your book), blue or pink. The latter two colors are quite uncommon. The book originally came in a labeled box.

It is a reprint and only has nominal value.

Question & Answer Series 179 Vademecum Series

Q: The only date (unfortunately) is in an inscription for 1898. There is also a small sticker in lower left corner of front cover that says supplied by W.F. Purnell, Sacramento.

A: This book is part of the Vademecum Series.
This series of reprints was published between 1894 and 1926. The cover design changed each year or so. Your book was published in 1897.

This book has been seen in several different colors. Shown below.

Series 105 Holly Tree Series

This series of twelve books has two formats. The first format which was published between 1904 and 1909 has gold gilt embellishments on the front cover with a decorative flower picture surrounding a book appropriate pictorial illustration. Multiple colors have been seen.

The second format has a line drawn book appropriate picture. There are two editions of this format. The earlier books (1909-1911) were published with the same illustrated endpapers that are seen in the Format 1 books. The later editions (published after 1911) have plain endpapers.

The dust jackets are shown below with examples of the book covers.

Question & Answer Platt and Munk Wee Books for Wee Folks

Q: Hi…. I have what appears to be a set of Wee Books For Wee Folks published by Platt & Munk, most of which have a copyright date of 1935 although not all. There are 28 books. I’m not sure if they should have dust jackets or if they came without them. The books are in a little bookcase which has no markings but seems to be made for them. And of course I am wondering what their value would be.

A: They all came with dust jackets originally. But when they were sold as this bookcase set, I am not certain that the jackets were included. It looks like you have the later reprints. For a general review of the Platt and Munk reprints see http://henryaltemus.com/reprints/platt.html

You obviously have a nice set although the absence of any dust jackets does reduce the value significantly.

The Sambo and Peter Rabbit books are the most collectible.

Although I cannot be certain, I believe your little book case is original and was made for the set. I say that because I have one that is identical with most of the books that are in your set.

Value is a hard question. Your set is great and looks to be in wonderful shape. Having said that the interest is somewhat limited. Certainly $100 is not unreasonable and perhaps more if the right buyer happens to see them. Appreciate that if you sell them separately a number of them will be very difficult to unload at any price.
