Petit Trianon Series

Q:  I have a 4"x6" book that appears to be old. I cannot find a date anywhere in the book. Can you tell me if it is an original or reprint? Picture of cover and inside attached.

A:  Your book was published in 1895-1896 as part of the Petit Trianon Series.

This format was published with numerous decorative right sided cover patterns with the same acorn decoration on the left.

It originally was published within a labeled box.
It is a reprint and has only nominal value.

Q:  Do you know what this book's value might be? Last Essays of Elia

Is it part of the Petit Trianon Series? It has an inscription from 1898. But, it has no publication date.


A:  Your book was published in 1897 as part of the Petit Trianon Series.

It is a common reprint. It originally came within a labeled box. It has only nominal value.

Q:  Hello, I have been searching your website and can't find this book (Weird Tales). I bought it at an auction in Norton, KS. It is very clean and in good shape, no tears, dog ears, or stains. The front inside cover has been written on and has an address label attached.
Any info you might have and what it might be worth would be greatly appreciated.

A:  This book was published in 1896. It is a reprint and was published within the Petit Trianon Series. It originally came with a labeled box.

Because this title was published so many times by so many publishers, it has limited value.

I have a book of Longfellow Poems that was published by Henry Altemus Co. I am hoping you may be able to provide some information regarding any history or potential value. The pictures are not great but I'm hoping you are familiar with this edition since your web site is so comprehensive. Thanks for your attention!


A:  Your book was published in 1897 as part of the Petit Trianon Series.

During this year all the books had the stereotypical dot design on the left half of the cover and any one of a number of decorative/floral designs on the right half of the cover. The book originally came in a labeled box.

Your book is a reprint of a not greatly in demand title and therefore has only nominal value.

Petit Trianon Series

Q:  i just found this little gem in my attic... im not sure if it was my family as I dont know w madge as the book was given to new, Christmas 1896 when it was published.

I looked at your site and did not see this cover displayed, so was wondering if you might have any info. Unfortunately the book is musty, its been in my attic since 1962 when my grandfather bought the house, its in a part of the attic that might have been left from previous owners.

I took some pics, they are in the zip file, if you need them resent, please advise. I look forward to any info you might be able to tell me.


A:  Your book is part of the Petit Trianon Series and was published in 1896/1897. All the books of this series have the same decoration on the left half of the cover but various floral/decorative designs on the right side. See ../series/series141.htm for more details.

Petit Trianon Series

Q:  I am hoping for some help identifying the year this was printed. There is a signature dated on the inside cover with 1896 and the introduction is dated 1878. The title is Tales from Shakespeare.

A:  Your book was published in 1896 and is part of the Petit Trianon Series. This series of reprints originally was published with a labeled box. In 1896 the left side of the front cover is common to all of the books but the right side has been seen with a number of different decorative patterns.

Q:  Good evening,
I hope you can tell me something about this book I found? It is a small hard bound book by Sir Walter Scott called Marmion: A tale of Flodden Field. It's a Henry Altemus, Manufacturer, Philadelphia publication.

I've attached a pic...let me know if you need more.
