Vademecum Series

Q:  Hello, I recently came into possession of a box of books my mother collected from yard sales and estate sales as a teenager. She has always had an affinity for vintage books, a trait I have inherited.

In the box was a copy of Edgar Allen Poe's Weird Tales and according to the fly leaf it was printed and bound by The Henry Altemus company. I was wondering if there was anything you might be able to tell me about it I'm having trouble finding more information online.

A:  Your book was published in 1899 as part of the Vademecum Series.
It is a reprint.

Q:  I have two questions about the book, Evangeline and Other Poems, that is pictured on the attachment. One, is it part of the Valdemecum #180 or Petit Trianon #143 series? Its size is 6 1/4 by 4 1/4 inches. It was received as a gift by the former owner in 1903. It was published by Henry Altemus Company. Second, what are the name(s) of the flowers on the cover?

I have visited your website and thank you for providing such good information on Henry Altemus books.

A:  Your book is part of the Vademecum Series and was published in 1904. On the webpage you can see books that have the same cover format in the 1904 pictures.

Your flowers match the Iris pictures. Of course, I wouldn’t know an iris from a dandelion but years ago a flower expert identified all of the Altemus cover flowers for me.
