Dainty Series

Q:  What are the value of these books? (Tattine, Doings of a Dear Little Couple, How a Dear Little Couple Went Abroad, Little Gervaise)

A:  These books are from the Dainty Series. Even in great condition with dust jackets they do not sell for much. In terrible shape they have little if any monetary value.

See: Dainty Series

Q:  I found this beautiful little book my grandmother gave to me and I was just curious about it. Tattine
Anything you could tell me about it would be much appreciated.

A:  Your book is part of the Dainty Series. See: http://henryaltemus.com/series/series74.htm

It was published in about 1910.

In 1899 the Dainty Series had the first of five different formats of which this is the fifth.

This book originally had a dust jacket.

This title was published in Formats 2-5. (Format 1 was published in 1899 and has Henry Altemus not Henry Altemus Company on the title page. Otherwise the book is the same as the Format 2 books.)

Q:  I have had this book since 1977, and would like to know its monetary value please. Thank you. Copyright is 1900 by the Henry Altemus Company, Philadelphia. The Voyage of the Mary Adair

A:  Your book is part of the Dainty Series. This series was published between 1899 and 1909 and had five different formats. This book is part of the 5th format and therefore it was published at the end of this series' run in 1909. Without a dust jacket this book has little value.

Even the earlier editions in jacket do not draw much interest. The earlier formats are shown on the series page for interest. Format 1 includes only Volume 1 of this series- thus, there is no format 1 for this book as it is #6 in the series.

Q:  Could you please give me any info about my book (The Children's Shakespeare) published in 1900 thank you

A:  Your book is part of the Dainty Series.

It is a Format 3 book and was published between 1903-1905. It originally came with a dust jacket. It is relatively common and only has nominal value.

The other formats are shown on the series page.

Q:  Hi. I saw your answer to someone's question about the value of 'Charles Dickens' Children Stories'. I attached a photo of the book that I just found. Would you be able to give me information??

A:  Your book is part of the Dainty Series. See ../series/series74.htm

This series has a number of formats all of which came in dust jackets. It was published between 1899-1909 and the books are quite commonly found.

Your book is from Format 3 and was published between 1903-1905.

Because it is an easy book to find, your book has little value-especially in rather poor shape.

Dainty Series

Q:  I have a book that was given to me that I am curious about. It is called The Children's Shakespeare written by E. Nesbit published by Philiadelphia Henry Altemus Company Copyright 1900. I found it in your archives under the Dainty Series. It is almost exactly the same with the exception that it does not have the Henry Altemus.com the bottom of it. Can you tell me a bit about it? Here is the picture. Is it rare? A first edition?

A:  Your book is part of the 5th format of this series. Dainty Series.
Thus it is not an Altemus first edition.

It is not especially rare and has very little collector interest especially without a dust jacket.

Dainty Series

Q:  I am doing research on two books published by the Henry Altemus Company. They were written by Mary D. Brine and published in 1900 and 1903. They are The Doings of a Little Couple (1900) and How a Little Couple Went Abroad (1903). I am interested in finding out the name of the illustrator or illustrators for each book. Would you have that information? They are going to be used in an exhibition and we would like to identify the artist of the illustration for the public. Additional information you can provide on the books would also be most helpful. Your web page was a wonderful find. If you could place the books within your series I would be most appreciative. I have attached a photograph of each book to assist you.

A:  I am unable to help with the illustrators. Sorry.

Both books were part of the Dainty Series (Series #74). The Dainty Series was a series of total of 26 books of which yours are numbered 9 (Doings..) and 15 (How..). There were a number of different formats. Your books are from Format 2 and were published in the early 1900s. They all came with dust jackets. I am enclosing a picture of what the format 2 books' jacket looked like. This series was occasionally called the Honor Bright Series in some catalogues.
